“Sunday morning, rain is falling
Steal some covers, share some skin
Driving slow on Sunday morning
And I never want to leave”
ONE Rock in Fashion
Who the hell is John Varvatos?
We love John Varvatos. Wait…we should clarify, we loved John Varvatos from 2000 to about 2015 when the menswear line was controlled and designed by its founder and namesake. During those years, the line successfully channeled the cult of rock and roll from its humble beginnings in Detroit to its supernova explosion that saw John lose the company and its soulful perspective on music, fashion and culture. This book can be kind of hard to find but you can occasionally find new copies or snag a used one. It’s highly recommended for the story and the photography.
TWO Nothing Without Mick Rock
There might not be rock in fashion without legendary - and highly influential - photographers like Mick Rock.
It’s no secret that here at WRENVEDDER we love a good photo. Especially a good black and white photo. So, naturally, we place Mick Rock amongst the gods of legendary fashion and rock and roll photographers. If you aren’t familiar with his name, we bet you’ve seen his work as it’s part of our collective past and still inspires our present and future. Mickrock.com is a pretty good place to start and the Morrison Hotel Gallery for more.
THREE The Power of Album Art
Album art was a fashion trend setter (and culture mover) in the 1970s and the creative team at Hipgnosis was as the height of the game.
The Netflix documentary, “Squaring the Circle” tells the story of a small design and photography firm that revolutionized the concept and cultural power of album art. Ride along as they struggle to create some of the most iconic album designs in history. Give the trailer a spin here.
