Rock’s Photographer, The Perfect White T-shirt & Acoustic U2
it’s sunday morning
Sunday, March 26th 2023 - Welcome to Issue 10 of our weekly email where we gather 3 style, wellness, travel or music links worth some time on a slow Sunday morning. Make a cup of coffee, find your favorite chair and cue the Velvet Underground…
“Sunday morning, rain is falling
Steal some covers, share some skin
Driving slow on Sunday morning
And I never want to leave”
ONE Show Me The Picture
When you think of rock and roll and a picture comes to mind - that picture was probably made by Jim Marshall.
Jim Marshall was a brilliant photographer who lived right on the edge of self destruction but…that’s rock and roll. He’s best known for the famous 1969 Johnny Cash middle-finger image from sound check at San Quentin Prison. This photo of Peter Frampton from Oakland in 1976 is my personal favorite frame from his huge catalogue of work. If you want to learn more about Jim, check out the 2019 documentary “Show Me The Picture” (currently streaming on Hulu) - here’s the trailer. (3 min watch)
TWO The Perfect White T-shirt
A white T-shirt + Levi’s. What else do you need?
White T-shirts were first mass-produced for the US military, who ordered shirts and boxer sets for every soldier in the early 20th century. In the early 1950s, Marlon Brando and James Dean made them a fashion icon that continues through today. But, what’s the perfect white T-shirt? If you are willing to part with 80 bucks, the standard short sleeve crew neck from James Perse comes pretty close.
THREE Acoustic U2
Bono and The Edge casually swing by the NPR offices with just an acoustic guitar (and a choir).
One half of U2 have been making the rounds in support of their new “Songs Of Surrender” album and upcoming Vegas residency (in the newly constructed Sphere - which is hard to describe in words so, hit the link if you are interested). This 3 song Tiny Desk of stripped down hits is worth a listen and a long way from what they are planning in Vegas. (21 min watch)
